Many of you know Chadwick Boseman as the actor who utilized his talent and creativity to bring iconic African American individuals to the big screen. This included his portrayal of Jackie Robinson, Thurgood Marshall, James Brown, and of course the fictional marvel character T’Challa or the Black Panther.
The sudden death of Chadwich shocked the world. Now, nearly two months after his death, many are surprised to find that his surviving spouse filed a Petition for Probate in LA County. Reports so far inform us that Mr. Boseman died without a will.
Surprisingly, he is not the first celebrity to pass without proper estate planning. Past examples include Prince, Heath Ledger, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Amy Winehouse.
Now that Mr. Boseman has passed, it is up to a probate court to determine the proper individuals to inherit his Estate. Proper estate planning includes a Trust into which certain assets are funded as well as a Will so that an individual can clearly state his or her intentions in regard to the distribution of property at death. Failure to have proper planning may result in the heirs of the deceased person having to deal with the cost and process of administering the estate in probate or the deceased person’s estate passing to unintended heirs.
If you or your loved ones do not have proper estate planning, including a Trust, Will, and Powers of Attorney for health care and property, you should act now to ensure that your assets and loved ones do not have to go through probate.
