Have You Updated Your Injury and Illness Prevention Plan?

As employers begin to navigate the new normal of dealing with Covid-19 in the workplace, now is the time to review and update your health and safety protocols to ensure compliance with Cal/OSHA requirements! In an effort to promote worker protection during the Covid-19 pandemic, Cal/OSHA is urging all employers to carefully review and follow state guidance on workplace health and safety in an effort to ensure employers understand their obligations in relation to protecting employees from Covid-19.

One of the main obligations that an employer has is the implementation and maintenance of an Injury and Illness Prevention Plan (IIPP). An IIPP is a written workplace safety program that should address eight specific elements related to employee safety:

  • Responsibility;
  • Compliance;
  • Communication;
  • Hazard Assessment;
  • Accident/Exposure Investigation;
  • Hazard Correction;
  • Training and Instruction; and
  • Recordkeeping.

Given that all California employers, regardless of size, are required to maintain some form of an IIPP, employers should ensure that they have a compliant IIPP in place that includes safety protocols in relation to Covid-19. Failure to have a compliant IIPP could trigger Cal/OSHA penalties and, ultimately, jeopardizes the health of all your employees.
