LA Car Wash Cited Almost $1 Million Dollars for Wage Theft Violations

A Los Angeles-based employer was cited almost $1 million dollars for minimum wage, overtime and rest break violations attributed to just 15 employees. The Labor Commissioner’s Office investigated the LA based car wash and their payroll records and determined that the employer failed to pay employees for all hours worked. Some of these employees were getting paid as low as $7 an hour when the minimum wage in LA County in 2020 was at least $14.25. The investigation also found that the employer did not provide employees with the required meal and rest breaks that significantly increased the penalties. In total, for only 15 employees, the Labor Commission found that the employer owed $908,998 in penalties.

This is just one example of the increase in investigations being done by the Labor Commissioner’s office and the reasons for increased claims against employers.  It is important for employers to properly pay employees for all hours worked and allow legally compliant meal and rest breaks. Penalties can add up quickly and failure to comply with Labor Code requirements can be detrimental to your business. When was the last time you audited your policies and practices to ensure your business is compliant?
